What Triggers My Childs Eczema Or Causes It To Get Worse

Baby Eczema – Causes, Signs and Treatment

Some of the most common eczema triggers include:

Even your babys stuffed animals may be a trigger for eczema

  • Dry skin
  • Infection
  • Allergens such as pet dander, pollen or dust

Your childs eczema may be worse in the winter when the air is dry. Saliva from drooling can also cause irritation on your babys cheeks, chin and neck.

The best way to manage your childs eczema is by getting to know their symptoms and triggers so that you can help keep it under control.

How To Help Prevent Your Babys Eczema From Recurring

Always follow your healthcare providerâs advice on treating your baby’s eczema. Your provider may suggest taking the following steps to help prevent eczema from recurring or getting worse:

  • Bathe your baby no more than three times per week.

  • Keep bathtime to no more than 15 minutes.

  • Use only mild, unscented soaps.

  • After bathtime, moisturize your babyâs skin with a fragrance-free cream or an ointment such as petroleum jelly or one prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  • Moisturize your babyâs skin at least twice a day . Diaper changes can be a good time to do this.

  • Launder your babyâs clothes in mild, unscented detergent.

  • Dress him in soft clothing. Avoid wool or any rough woven fabrics.

  • To help protect your little oneâs skin, keep his nails clipped short so that he canât scratch himself. You could also slip cotton mittens on his hands before bedtime to help prevent him from scratching.

If your baby has eczema, it can look scary, but with care from your provider supplemented by effective at-home treatment, your little oneâs skin should improve in time. In the meantime, keep showering your little one with lots of love and kisses.

What Causes Eczema In Babies

Your bundle of joy at 3 months old suddenly starts developing red crusty cheeks. Your 1 year old has itchy, crusty, red folds of the elbows and behind the knees. What gives? These are symptoms of eczema also called atopic dermatitis. This flaky, itchy, scaly, irritated condition occurs in different characteristic locations at different ages. As children start to get over the age of two the rash that was on the face and in the folds of the arms and legs will usually start to migrate to the outside of the elbows and knees. Now that we have defined what eczema is we should look at what causes eczema in babies.

Eczema And Food Allergies

Research shows that babies with eczema are at highest risk of developing food allergies. New guidelines from the NIH on baby food allergen introduction are specifically focused on infants with eczema as this risk group needs food allergen introduction, and in turn, early allergen introduction the most.

When To See A Doctor

Eczema remedies for babies

You may seek your pediatricians advice if you notice any skin rashes or eczema symptoms in your baby. A doctor can diagnose the exact cause and prescribe a treatment.

Seek immediate medical care in the following situations .

l Fever and signs of a skin infection, such as redness and pus

  • Baby is less than three months old
  • Blisters or vesicles on the skin
  • Baby cries while scratching or touching the eczema rash

Contact the doctor if you have any concerns, or if your baby is sick. The doctor can diagnose the skin rash by observation and may order some tests to identify allergic reactions. Exact diagnosis is crucial to determine the type of eczema and the subsequent management plan.

What Are Other Ways To Help Prevent Food Allergy

Many health professionals now think there are two steps parents can take to help prevent food allergy.

  • Avoid unnecessary delays when introducing new solid foods to your baby.
  • If your baby tolerates a new food, continue to offer it regularly. Regularly means about once per week, or more often if you prefer. Offering foods regularly may remind the immune system to tolerate the foods rather than develop an allergy to them.
  • Health Canada recommends introducing solid foods to babies starting at six months of age. Babies with eczema should also be offered solid foods starting at six months.

You can introduce boneless fish, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame seeds in age appropriate forms starting at six months of age if you wish. Whole tree nuts and big globs of peanut butter are choking hazards. You can start by offering peanut, tree nut and sesame seed butters mixed into infant cereal.

When your baby is ready for finger foods, you can offer these foods spread thinly on small strips of toast. For more information about introducing solid foods to babies, see Babys First Foods and Reducing Risk of Food Allergy in Your Baby.

Since 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommends delaying the introduction of foods such as fish, eggs and foods that contain peanut protein beyond 4 to 6 months of age to babies at increased risk for allergy.

When Should I Start Introducing Peanuts

There have been changes since 2015 in the recommendation for introducing peanuts via age appropriate food to children with eczema. The recommendations are based on the landmark study Learning Early About Peanut Allergy . The latest recommendation is to introduce peanuts at the age of 4-6 months for children with severe eczema and 6 months for children with mild or moderate eczema. The idea is that early exposure can help build tolerance when the immune system is still developing rather than at a later age when it is harder to the immune system to adapt.

Peanut specific IgE or skin prick testing should be done before introducing peanuts to determine severity of allergies/sensitivities.

What Are The Complications Of Eczema

Affected skin can be very itchy. The itchiness can cause sleep difficulties for your child or infant and scratching can also lead to breaking of the skin.

Broken skin may become infected with bacteria that commonly live on childrens hands. Bacterial infections may cause inflamed blisters which can weep and form crusts.

Warts and herpes can also infect eczema rash. Infection with herpes can cause serious problems and is an emergency which needs to be treated urgently. If someone has a cold sore, make sure to keep a distance from a child with eczema.

How Does Baby Eczema Differ From Dry Skin

Dry skin is a symptom of eczema. Your pediatrician can diagnose eczema by examining your baby’s skin. He or she may send you to a pediatric dermatologist for confirmation and treatment if the condition is severe.

In general, dry skin can be handled at home with some moisturizer and isnt as bothersome as eczema. However, babies with darker skin tend to have drier skin than those with lighter skin making moisturization even more crucial.

    What Doesnt Cause Eczema

Eczema is not contagious. You can’t catch eczema by coming in contact with someone who has it.

Eczema is not an allergic reaction. Even so, a large number of children who have eczema also have food allergies. That doesn’t mean that certain foods such as dairy, eggs, and nuts — common food allergy triggers in children with eczema — cause it or make it worse. Before removing particular foods from your child’s diet, talk with your doctor to be sure your child’s nutritional needs will be met.

Baby Eczema And Cradle Cap Symptoms

    Eczema: Symptoms

Baby eczema causes symptoms such as a red rash that makes the skin dry, itchy, and scaly. The rash can also have small bumps, which may ooze or weep fluid. Other symptoms may include:

    • Thickened skin
    • Darkened skin on the eyelids and around the eyes
    • Changes to the skin around the mouth, eyes, or ears

Cradle cap causes symptoms not commonly seen in other types of infantile eczema, such as greasy yellow scales on the scalp that sometimes appear in a thick layer covering the entire top of the head. Over time, the scales become flaky and rub off.

Most babies do not appear to be bothered by cradle cap, though it sometimes itches.

A baby with atopic dermatitis has an increased risk of other atopic conditions, including asthma, hay fever, and food allergies.

When To Talk To Your Doctor About Baby Eczema

Always talk with your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns about your babys skin. Thanks to telemedicine, a video visit or quick photo is often all that’s needed to check for eczema.

Occasionally, infections develop on top of an eczema rash. If you see any yellow-colored crusting and scabbing, oozy skin, blisters or pus bumps, be sure to call your doctor right away. Always call if your baby has a fever. Your baby may need an antibiotic and to be evaluated in person.

    Causes Of Atopic Eczema

The exact cause of atopic eczema is unknown, but it’s clear it is not down to one single thing.

Atopic eczema often occurs in people who get allergies. “Atopic” means sensitivity to allergens.

It can run in families, and often develops alongside other conditions, such as asthma and hay fever.

The symptoms of atopic eczema often have certain triggers, such as soaps, detergents, stress and the weather.

Sometimes food allergies can play a part, especially in young children with severe eczema.

You may be asked to keep a food diary to try to determine whether a specific food makes your symptoms worse.

Allergy tests are not usually needed, although they’re sometimes helpful in identifying whether a food allergy may be triggering symptoms.

Managing Eczema: Knowing And Avoiding Possible Triggers

Although we dont know what causes eczema to develop in the first place, we do know many triggers that can cause baby eczema to suddenly get worse.

If your child has eczema, it may flare up when their skin is exposed to any number of triggers.

Some triggers that may cause eczema flare-ups include:

    • Dry skin
    • Environmental allergens, especially if your child already has an environmental allergy
    • Common allergy-causing foods, especially if your child already has an allergy to that food

One key to baby eczema management is identifying possible triggers that seem to cause eczema to flare up, then keeping babys skin from coming in contact with them.

Some possible triggers should be avoided outright when your baby has eczema.

For example, stay away from shampoos, soaps, lotions, and laundry detergents that contain fragrances and dyes. Opt for unscented, dye-free bath and laundry products instead. Mild, unscented liquid body wash is always a good choice.

Also, dont dress your baby in synthetic fabrics like polyester, wool, and nylon. Dont use blankets and covers made from these fabrics, either. And avoid any other itchy, tight clothing. Opt for natural, loose-fitting cotton clothing instead, and use cotton bedding for their crib.

Be sure to wash new clothing and bedding before their first use as well, since unwashed fabric can contain irritating chemicals.

    When To Seek Medical Advice

Causes of Eczema and How to Treat It Naturally

See a GP if you have symptoms of atopic eczema. They’ll usually be able to diagnose atopic eczema by looking at your skin and asking questions, such as:

    • whether the rash is itchy and where it appears
    • when the symptoms first began
    • whether it comes and goes over time
    • whether there’s a history of atopic eczema in your family
    • whether you have any other conditions, such as allergies or asthma
    • whether something in your diet or lifestyle may be contributing to your symptoms

Typically, to be diagnosed with atopic eczema you should have had an itchy skin condition in the last 12 months and 3 or more of the following:

    • visibly irritated red skin in the creases of your skin such as the insides of your elbows or behind your knees at the time of examination by a health professional
    • a history of skin irritation occurring in the same areas mentioned above
    • generally dry skin in the last 12 months
    • a history of asthma or hay fever children under 4 must have an immediate relative, such as a parent, brother or sister, who has 1 of these conditions
    • the condition started before the age of 2

    Signs Of Eczema In Babies

The initial observation will depend on the childs age. The starting signs are patches on the face owing to the skin being dry, and this could be a cause of irritation to the baby. The flare-up in rashes with oozing blisters with inflammation could be another indication.

Dry skin or hard skin formation due to excessive scratching could also be a cause of eczema. The intensity of the rashes could be noticed if there is bleeding in the affected area. Only tests will reveal whether it is due to genetics, or is a case of an allergy. It is generally believed that babies outgrow these on reaching adolescence. A few of the symptoms can be easily identified on the baby

FDA Acknowledges Qualified Health Claim Linking Early Peanut Introduction and Reduced Risk of Developing Peanut Allergy in 2017:

For most infants with severe eczema and/or egg allergy who are already eating solid foods, introducing foods containing ground peanuts between 4 and 10 months of age and continuing consumption may reduce the risk of developing peanut allergy by 5 years of age. FDA has determined, however, that the evidence supporting this claim is limited to one study.

If your infant has severe eczema and/or egg allergy, check with your infants healthcare provider before feeding foods containing ground peanuts.
